POWERGRID, Africa50 Sign Kenya Transmission PPP Pact
The agreement was signed in the presence of senior POWERGRID officials, including Chairman and Managing Director Dr R K Tyagi, Director (Personnel) Dr Yatindra Dwivedi and Chief Operating Officer (International Business) Sanjay Kumar Gupta, along with key representatives of the Kenyan government. These included officials from the State Department for Energy, the National Treasury and the Public Private Partnerships Directorate.
The project represents Africa’s first Independent Transmission Project and is also POWERGRID’s first project-financed international transmission venture on the continent. The proposed transmission lines and associated substations are aimed at strengthening Kenya’s national grid, improving system reliability and enabling efficient evacuation of power from renewable energy-rich regions to major demand centres.
Structured under a PPP framework, the initiative reflects growing confidence in private sector participation in Africa’s power transmission sector. Africa50 brings regional expertise and financial structuring capabilities to the partnership, while POWERGRID contributes its technical, operational and project management experience in executing large-scale transmission projects.
With operations spanning more than 25 countries across Asia, Africa and Europe, POWERGRID has built a strong track record in delivering transmission solutions in diverse and challenging environments. The collaboration with Africa50 further underscores POWERGRID’s expanding role as a trusted global partner in power transmission infrastructure development.
