Rajasthan to Install 10M Free Smart Meters for Cheaper, Efficient Power Use

Good news for electricity consumers in Rajasthan! The state government is set to begin the installation of free 'smart meters' across approximately 14.3 million electricity connections. This initiative aims to provide more affordable electricity, with a 15 paise per unit discount for those opting for the prepaid option. The state government has issued an order mandating the installation of smart meters for all types of consumers—domestic, agricultural, and commercial. Importantly, there will be no installation fee; any request for payment can be reported through a consumer complaint.

These smart meters will be linked to the 'Bijli Mitra' mobile app, allowing consumers to choose the prepaid option ("Pahle Paisa, Phir Bijli") for the discount.

Key benefits of smart meters include: - Real-time monitoring of electricity consumption: Consumers can track their usage in real time, whether at home, in a shop, or in a factory. - Control over electricity expenses: By monitoring consumption, consumers can manage their electricity load and reduce unnecessary usage. - Faster resolution of power outage complaints: Electricity providers will be notified of power outages instantly, allowing for quicker resolution. - Reduced billing errors: With automatic readings sent by the smart meters, billing errors will be minimised. - Simplified and automated billing process: The system will automate billing, bringing ease and convenience to consumers.

Here’s the breakdown of the smart meter installation and costs by DISCOM: - Jaipur DISCOM: 4.763 million meters, estimated cost Rs 31.38 billion. - Ajmer DISCOM: 5.432 million meters, estimated cost Rs 36.63 billion. - Jodhpur DISCOM: 4.080 million meters, estimated cost Rs 28.77 billion.

Previously, under the Congress government, around 530,000 smart meters were installed. With this new state-wide rollout, consumers will not only benefit from reduced electricity costs but also gain better control over their power usage.
