According to an international sustainable development agency based in Vienna, there is significant growth potential for the renewable energy sector in India due to the country's increasing energy demand and rapid industrialisation, which requires all available energy resources, including solar and wind. Kanika Chawla, Director and Chief of Staff at 'Sustainable Energy For All' (SEforALL), stated that the Indian government has demonstrated a strong and ongoing commitment to renewable energy.

In an interview with PTI during the Singapore International Energy Week held from October 21-25, Chawla noted that more manufacturing of renewable energy solutions is taking place within India, which enhances energy security and reduces dependence on imports.

She explained that India is implementing policies such as performance-linked incentives to boost manufacturing, which she praised as commendable and beneficial for the economic prosperity of the people through energy access. Chawla also recognized that clean energy solutions are highly job-intensive, with each kilowatt-hour of renewable energy generating three times as many jobs compared to thermal energy.

Chawla mentioned that India is exploring geothermal energy options in regions like Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, and Ladakh, and highlighted that offshore wind energy exploration is currently underway, with significant potential in states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

She pointed out that India is a price-sensitive market, emphasizing the need to reduce the cost of renewable energy units. She noted that solar prices have dropped significantly over the past decade, making solar energy the most affordable renewable energy source globally. Given the country's strong demand for electricity, she underscored the importance of incorporating wind energy into the national energy mix.
