RIR Power Secures Overseas Thyristor Order

RIR Power Electronics has secured a large overseas order to supply 120 units of its 5kV silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) thyristors in the first phase. The order reinforces growing global confidence in the Mumbai-based company’s high-performance semiconductor devices, assemblies and energy management systems.

The company’s 125 mm 5kV SCR thyristors are high-current semiconductor switching devices designed for heavy-power applications requiring very high current handling, short-duration high di/dt pulses and strong reliability. Built with a 125 mm silicon chip in press-pack construction, the devices offer high mechanical reliability, optimised lifetime control, low thermal resistance and strong surge current capability.

The order has been placed by a leading Class I Electrical EPC contractor engaged in turnkey electrification projects for industries and power plants worldwide. RIR Power Electronics said the order is among the largest single orders for its 125 mm pulse power thyristor range and is scheduled for execution by the end of 2026.

N Ramesh Kumar, MD & CEO, RIR Power Electronics, said the company expects to expand such mandates and strengthen partnerships with Class I Electrical EPC contractors. He added that RIR Power Electronics is also setting up a state-of-the-art silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing plant in Odisha to support India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions.

The company’s high-power press-pack thyristors are used in HVDC transmission valves, Static VAR Compensators, medium-voltage soft starters, high-power rectifiers, crowbar protection systems, pulsed capacitor discharge systems, traction and legacy locomotive systems, and defence applications requiring high-energy bursts in short durations. RIR Power Electronics expects stronger business momentum as it broadens its product portfolio and expands its global presence in the power semiconductor industry.
