Seven Point Five Million Homes Targeted For Rooftop Solar By Dec 2026

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy said the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to reach seven point five million (mn) households by December 2026 after crossing four million households in two years. He noted that more than six point five million (mn) applications are already in the pipeline and expressed confidence in continued public participation. The remarks came at an event that reviewed progress and future priorities for residential rooftop solar.

The minister outlined a Utility Linked Aggregation model designed to accelerate adoption among underserved households, with around three million (mn) rooftop installations planned across States and utilities expected to facilitate execution. He said the initiative targets families consuming between one kilowatt (kW) and three kW of electricity to widen access to affordable clean energy. The scheme has driven substantial installations and pipeline growth nationwide.

He highlighted rapid national solar expansion, noting earlier phases of capacity addition and that May 2026 recorded a single month high of 0.316 million rooftop installations and 15,000 households added in one day. The pace to add 0.1 million households has fallen from 118 days to less than eight days, underlining deployment acceleration. Rooftop deployment now forms a growing share of residential solar capacity as overall solar capacity surpasses 150 GW.

The minister said subsidies totalling Rs 227.5 billion (bn) have been disbursed so far, including Rs 27.43 billion in May 2026, and that the programme is strengthening energy security amid global uncertainties. He launched the scheme logo and a WhatsApp bot, presented awards and released reports that flagged operational maintenance needs and estimated a potential of 0.33 million (mn) jobs annually as deployment scales. The scheme, launched on 13 February 2024 with an outlay of Rs 750.21 billion, has over 3.3 million rooftop systems installed and has added more than 12 GW of capacity to date.
