Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar systems have been installed on 588,047 houses across Gujarat, equal to about 0.588 million (mn) houses. Surat district emerged as the top performer in the state with 74,940 rooftop installations, followed by Ahmedabad with 69,522 and Rajkot with 65,514. Other districts with substantial uptake included Vadodara at 50,100 and Junagadh at 28,726. The figures were collated from state implementation reports and reflect installations completed under the subsidy and free distribution components.

The scheme was launched two years ago to promote free and affordable electricity through rooftop solar energy and has targeted household adoption across urban and rural areas. In 2025 alone, more than one million (mn) houses across the country were covered under the scheme, demonstrating rapid national expansion. Officials reported strong local participation in Surat, where thousands of residents have installed systems. The programme design included subsidised equipment and assistance with installation to reduce barriers to household uptake.

District-level data shows Mehsana at 27,054 installations, Bhavnagar at 26,408 and Banaskantha at 20,448, with Anand and Jamnagar recording 19,512 and 18,354, respectively. The distribution of installations reflects both government outreach and local contractor activity that facilitated rapid deployment. Households with rooftop systems noted reduced electricity bills and increased self-generation capacity. Local suppliers and technicians were engaged to speed up installation cycles and provide aftercare support.

Electricity consumption has continued to rise amid persistent heat and urban demand pressures, and experts said power demand was likely to increase further in the coming years. The growing gap between demand and supply has made rooftop solar an increasingly important alternative for household energy needs. Continued expansion of the scheme and local uptake will be critical to easing grid stress and supporting energy transition goals. Authorities plan continued monitoring and support to ensure system reliability.
