Tata Power Builds 2.8 GW Energy Pipeline for Data Centres

Tata Power is building a diversified opportunity pipeline of more than 2.8 gigawatts (GW) to support India’s expanding data centre ecosystem, covering renewable energy, transmission and distribution projects. The company said it is emerging as a preferred partner for hyperscalers and artificial intelligence-led digital infrastructure developments.

The pipeline includes approximately 430 MW of upcoming load under Tata Power’s distribution network, 1,236 MW of transmission-linked opportunities and 1,150 MW of green energy capacity under active engagement. The company has 29 active workstreams involving 18 leading global and domestic data centre operators.

Tata Power is expanding its role beyond electricity supply by offering powered land, transmission and grid connectivity, renewable energy, storage, cooling and utility infrastructure. These services are intended to support the development of hyperscale and advanced data centre facilities as demand from cloud, artificial intelligence and digital platforms increases.

To meet rising electricity requirements in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the company is upgrading its 110 kV and 220 kV transmission networks. It is also increasing transformation and transmission capacity and developing network redundancy to provide reliable and uninterrupted power for large-scale digital infrastructure projects.

In parallel, Tata Power is developing new receiving stations and advancing a 400 kV transmission ring network. The planned network is intended to provide a resilient and secure grid capable of supporting additional data centre capacity in the region. The infrastructure programme forms part of the company’s Rs. 150 bn Mumbai Grid Upgradation and Expansion Plan.

India is seeking to strengthen its position as a global artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure hub, making power availability an important factor in future growth. Based on estimates from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the Ministry of Power projects that artificial intelligence-led data centres could add approximately 26.3 GW to electricity demand by FY2031-32.
