Tata Power Targets Rooftop Solar Across 300,000 Bengal Homes
Bengal has recorded 10,146 installations covering 25,708 households on the PM Surya Ghar portal. This compares with 5.25 mn installations covering 6.23 mn households nationwide, highlighting the state’s relatively low adoption of rooftop solar.
Praveer Sinha, chief executive officer and managing director of Tata Power, said the company had suggested that Bengal offer stronger incentives to accelerate adoption. The state has adopted the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and set a target of covering 500,000 households with rooftop solar installations by March 2027.
For installations of up to 1 kW, beneficiaries are eligible for combined subsidies of Rs. 35,000, comprising Rs. 30,000 from the Centre and Rs. 5,000 from the state. Bengal’s contribution is below the additional support available in some other states, where subsidies range from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 per kW.
Tata Power has held preliminary discussions with the state government on establishing large solar power plants and is assessing land availability. Solar parks are among the options being considered, alongside potential manufacturing and power-generation investments. The company has indicated that investment in the state could reach about Rs. 25 bn if the proposals materialise, although the plans remain at an early stage.
Separately, Tata Power expects its capital expenditure programme of about Rs. 280 bn through FY28 to remain on track. The company said the programme had not been affected by leadership and governance differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts.
