TN's peak power demand projected to touch new level in 2024

amil Nadu is set to experience a surge in peak power demand, with projections indicating a peak demand of 20,806 MW in 2024-25, surpassing the state's all-time high of 19,387 MW recorded on April 20, 2023. This forecast, recently made by the Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA), raises concerns about the resilience of the state's distribution infrastructure, particularly in Chennai, as the region grappled with nighttime power cuts during the summer months this year.

According to the CEA's state-wise electricity demand forecast, Tamil Nadu is anticipated to witness its highest power demand in April 2024. In recent years, the state has consistently recorded its peak demand during the months of April and May. The projected peak demand for 2024-25 exceeds the highest recorded peak demand this year by approximately 1,419 MW, signifying a substantial increase in electricity consumption.

The escalation in power demand underscores the critical need for infrastructure enhancements and more robust distribution systems to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted power supply, especially during periods of high demand. It also highlights the importance of proactive measures to meet the growing electricity requirements of the state.
