Torrent Opens Uttar Pradesh’s First Green Hydrogen Plant

Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group has inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur, launched by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Jointly developed by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, the facility will produce 72,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum.
The hydrogen will be blended with natural gas in Torrent Gas’ City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in Gorakhpur, with a concentration of up to 2 per cent. The mix will be supplied to households, CNG stations and industries through the existing pipeline network. Torrent highlighted that this is also the largest green hydrogen and natural gas blending project in India’s CGD sector.
Torrent Gas holds licences to distribute Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar and Kushinagar districts. It has already established 32 CNG stations, supplies PNG to over 12,000 households, and caters to 73 industries and commercial establishments.
Chief Minister Adityanath said the plant aligns with the state’s target of producing 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually, backed by a dedicated policy framework. He emphasised that green hydrogen will now directly reach households and transport, offering cleaner energy options and improving daily convenience.
Jinal Mehta, Director of Torrent Group, said the commissioning marks the first step in Torrent’s long-term strategy to build large-scale green hydrogen plants across India. He added that blending green hydrogen with natural gas provides a scalable pathway to decarbonisation, reduces emissions, and supports India’s net-zero ambitions.
