Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha announced that the state government will provide a subsidy of over Rs one billion (bn) to reduce the additional financial burden on electricity consumers following a recent rise in power costs. The measure was taken after the chief minister returned from Delhi and held discussions with the education minister, the finance minister, the chief secretary and senior officials to find a solution to the increased charges. The government presented and passed the subsidy proposal in cabinet, and it said the move was intended to prevent the higher generation cost from affecting ordinary households.

The chief minister told reporters that public protests over the issue were understandable and that people had every right to raise their voice when they faced difficulties. He explained that, despite well known financial constraints, the administration had arranged for the subsidy so that the burden would not fall on common people. Officials indicated that the relief package had been designed to target the additional charges caused by recent cost pressures rather than to alter underlying tariff structures.

Dr Saha attributed the rise in gas prices to the Russia Ukraine war and to tensions between Iran and the United States, which had increased the cost of power generation and transmission. The state government said it had reviewed options with the finance department to fund the subsidy while seeking to maintain fiscal prudence. The announcement followed consultations across departments and was framed as an immediate relief measure.

The government expressed hope that the decision would ease hardship and help households manage higher bills in the short term. It said implementation details would be finalised by the state administration and that monitoring would be conducted to ensure the subsidy reached consumers. The move was presented as an effort to balance fiscal constraints with social welfare obligations.
