The Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, visited Bhutan and inspected the Punatsangchhu-I Hydropower Project (Punatsangchhu I project) and the Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project (Punatsangchhu II project) as part of bilateral cooperation. At the Punatsangchhu I project he attended the ceremony for the pour of concrete for the dam, which marked a significant construction milestone for the largest joint hydropower venture between the two countries. The minister noted that the project is expected to enhance Bhutan's hydropower capacity substantially upon completion.

During the visit he emphasised the long-standing partnership in the energy sector and underlined India's continued support through financial assistance and technical collaboration, while commending coordinated efforts of engineers and experts from both sides. He inspected the powerhouse at Punatsangchhu I and received a briefing on implementation status and key milestones achieved to date. The minister later proceeded to Punatsangchhu II to review operational performance.

Punatsangchhu II, which was jointly inaugurated on 11 November 2025 by the Prime Minister of India and the King of Bhutan, has emerged as a significant contributor to Bhutan's energy sector and has already generated substantial electricity and revenue, enabling exports of clean power to India. The minister appreciated the execution and operational efficiency, acknowledged the contribution to Bhutan's economic growth and reaffirmed India's commitment to supporting sustainable energy development. He inspected the powerhouse and dam site and was apprised of ongoing operations and maintenance arrangements.

The visit also included a call at Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, recognised as a repository of Bhutan's historical and cultural heritage, reflecting the wider context of bilateral ties beyond energy cooperation. Officials from the Ministry of Power and project authorities accompanied the minister throughout the programme and noted continuing collaboration on implementation and operational matters. The visit was presented as an affirmation of the shared priority of clean energy development and mutual economic benefit.
