In a significant move to promote green energy, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has set an ambitious target to install 8 lakh solar rooftop systems across the state by March 2027, as part of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. This initiative is aligned with the broader national goal established by the Government of India, which aims to install ten million rooftop solar units within the same time frame.

For the financial year 2025–26, the Uttar Pradesh government has committed to installing 2.65 lakh units, with a monthly target of 22,000 installations, equating to roughly 300 installations per district. The campaign has gained significant momentum, having already completed over 1 lakh installations, with an average of 11,000 units being added each month—more than 500 per day.

To ensure smooth execution, specific targets have been assigned to districts, DISCOMs, municipal corporations, and municipalities. The progress of the scheme is being monitored in real-time through the integration of data with the Chief Minister’s Dashboard, ensuring transparency and accountability at all levels.

The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) is spearheading the state-wide rollout of the scheme, making solar energy more accessible and affordable for the public. By March 2025, the government had received 10.73 lakh applications through the official portal, with the vendor listing process still underway.

As of April 2025, over 2,500 vendors had been empanelled, with 1,800 of them receiving formal training to support the implementation of the scheme. These vendors are being financially empowered through access to loans and credit guarantee schemes, facilitated by banks. Training programs are being organized in collaboration with the National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development, the Ministry of Skill Development, and UPNEDA.

Launched in February 2024, the rooftop solar scheme has emerged as a flagship initiative under the Yogi government’s green energy agenda. Through the expansion of renewable energy, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a national leader in solar energy adoption, supporting both environmental sustainability and energy self-reliance for millions of households.
