Uttar Pradesh Rooftop Solar Capacity Reaches 3,000 MW

Uttar Pradesh has installed more than 900,000 rooftop solar plants, taking the state’s total rooftop solar capacity to 3,000 megawatts (MW). The programme is adding around 9 to 10 MW of residential rooftop capacity daily, according to officials from the state’s alternative energy department.

Officials said the pace of expansion compares with rooftop solar additions in major international markets. Australia added around 1.89 gigawatts of rooftop solar capacity between January and June 2026, equivalent to an average of about 10.4 MW a day. Residential solar installations in the US averaged around 13.1 MW a day in the first quarter and 10.9 MW a day in the second quarter.

Germany added building-mounted solar capacity at an average rate of around 17.5 MW a day during the first half of the year. Against this backdrop, officials said Uttar Pradesh’s daily additions reflected the scale of its solar programme and were close to Australia’s average rate for the broader rooftop solar market.

Eligible beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are receiving subsidies of up to Rs. 0.11 mn from the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government, subject to prescribed guidelines. The support is intended to lower the upfront cost of rooftop solar systems for households.

Ravinder Singh, director of the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), said a network of more than 9,500 vendors had helped create an estimated 100,000 direct jobs in installation, equipment supply, transportation, maintenance and related services. Based on installed capacity and average generation of 4.5 units per kilowatt a day, the systems can generate around 13.5 mn units of clean electricity daily.

The expansion is also supporting the supply and manufacture of solar modules, inverters, batteries, cables, mounting structures and other equipment. Local enterprises involved in installation and maintenance are gaining additional business opportunities as household adoption increases across the state.
