Vi Taps Cisco to Power Next-Gen Network
As part of the agreement, Vi will deploy Cisco’s advanced Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology to create a high-capacity, software-driven transport network. This will significantly improve the telecom player’s ability to manage surging data traffic and support data-heavy digital services such as HD video streaming, online gaming, and enterprise-grade internet solutions.
The joint statement from the companies highlighted that Cisco’s MPLS solution will enable Vi to automate core network operations, streamline traffic management, and boost operational efficiency. The upgraded infrastructure is also expected to bring faster internet speeds, lower latency, better security, and improved cost management.
“Our collaboration with Cisco demonstrates our commitment to staying at the forefront of network technology,” said Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer at Vodafone Idea. “This robust transport network is designed to meet the challenges of modern network environments, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security.”
Cisco, on its part, emphasized that this initiative will serve as a strong foundation for future upgrades in Vi’s 4G and 5G backhaul capabilities. “Our collaboration with Vi is powering a future-ready network that meets the evolving needs of users,” said Gordon Thomson, Vice President, Service Provider - EMEA at Cisco.
The move comes at a time when Vodafone Idea is seeking to bolster its digital infrastructure amid rising demand for high-speed, reliable connectivity in India’s increasingly digital economy. Vi recently raised over Rs 180 billion (approx. $2.2 billion) through a follow-on public offering (FPO) to invest in network expansion and 5G rollout plans.
