Vikram Solar Targets First Cell Production at 9 GW Tamil Nadu Plant

Vikram Solar said its 9 GW N-type TOPCon solar cell manufacturing facility at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, is scheduled to produce its first cells in December 2026. Full capacity will be commissioned in phases, making the project a central part of the company’s manufacturing integration plan.

At full capacity, the plant will supply high-efficiency TOPCon cells for most of Vikram Solar’s module production. It will support modules made in India from cells through to frames for utility-scale and rooftop projects, as well as the PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM programmes, where domestic content requirements apply. The company also plans to seek ALMM List-II enlistment for cells produced at Gangaikondan.

The cell plant represents the second phase of Vikram Solar’s three-stage integration roadmap for the site. The first phase, a 6 GW module plant, was inaugurated by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in August 2026. The third phase is a board-approved 9 GW ingot and wafer facility targeted for FY29, while the cell phase itself is planned to expand to 12 GW.

Once completed, the Gangaikondan campus will be among the limited sites in India producing ingots, wafers, cells and modules at one location. The integrated facility is expected to create more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs and is being developed through wholly owned subsidiary VSL Green Power on a nearly 200-acre campus.

Vikram Solar Chairman and Managing Director Gyanesh Chaudhary said the project would reduce the company’s dependence on imported cells and strengthen its domestic manufacturing capabilities. He described cell production as a significant step in the company’s integration journey, which is intended to extend from wafer manufacturing to finished modules in India. Co-location at the campus is also expected to shorten supply cycles, improve quality control and reduce logistics costs.
