West Bengal Allots Land to Websol for Rs. 15-17 bn Solar Plant

The West Bengal government has allotted around 54.20 acres at Falta Industrial Park to Websol Energy System for establishing a greenfield solar cell and module manufacturing facility. The company said the land was allocated after it assessed locations near its existing operations at the Falta Special Economic Zone.

The proposed facility will involve an investment of Rs. 15-17 bn and will have solar cell manufacturing capacity of 4 GW. It will also have 4 GW of solar module capacity, with the overall development planned in two phases of 2 GW each.

Websol said the expansion would build on more than three decades of operating experience in West Bengal. The company identified access to skilled manpower, established supplier relationships and familiarity with the local industrial ecosystem as factors supporting its decision to expand in the state.

The project is expected to create a larger integrated manufacturing base for Websol in eastern India. The company said the facility would support its expansion as domestic solar manufacturing capacity increases to meet the country’s rising renewable energy requirements.

Websol Chairman and Managing Director Sohan Lal Agarwal said the company’s entry into solar manufacturing in the mid-1990s had taken place when India’s industry was at an early stage. He said the new land allotment would enable the company to operate at a significantly larger scale while remaining close to its established ecosystem, workforce and operating base.

Executive Director Sanjana Khaitan said the immediate focus would be on moving from land allotment to construction, commissioning and utilisation. She added that the company would measure growth not only through installed capacity but also through the efficiency with which capacity supports production, deliveries and revenue, in line with its 2028 targets.
