BorgWarner Wins Hybrid SUV Turbocharger Deal in East Asia

BorgWarner has signed a major supply agreement with a prominent East Asian original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to provide advanced wastegate turbochargers for its 1.6L hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) SUV engines in Korea. The new contract extends an 18-year collaboration, strengthening BorgWarner’s position as a trusted partner and leader in high-efficiency boosting technologies.

“This award underscores our commitment to delivering high-performance, efficient turbocharging solutions that support the customer’s ambitious HEV growth strategy,” said Dr Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, Turbos and Thermal Technologies.

The state-of-the-art wastegate turbocharger is engineered to meet the stringent performance and efficiency demands of modern hybrid powertrains. Featuring a robust actuator and optimised wastegate valve design, it ensures precise boost control across varying engine loads, enabling faster response, smoother acceleration, and improved drivability.

Built for high thermal durability and mechanical strength, the turbocharger maintains reliability under elevated exhaust gas temperatures typical in hybrid cycles. Component-level optimization minimises friction and thermal losses, boosting fuel economy while reducing emissions.

Production will commence in 2027 at BorgWarner’s Pyongtaek facility in Korea, ensuring localized manufacturing and efficient supply for the regional market.
