LANXESS Oxone Enables Low-Temperature Sustainable Washing

LANXESS is supporting detergent manufacturers in meeting rising consumer demand for sustainable yet effective cleaning solutions through its Oxone Monopersulfate Compound, a fast-acting and powerful oxidising agent designed for cold-wash detergent formulations. The specialty chemical enables strong cleaning performance at temperatures as low as 20°C, helping households reduce energy consumption and costs without compromising wash quality.

Oxone has demonstrated superior stain removal compared with sodium percarbonate, either alone or combined with tetraacetylethylenediamine, particularly against tough stains such as wine, grape juice, coffee and tea. According to LANXESS, washing at lower temperatures can help households save up to 27 kilograms of CO? per year compared with washing at 40°C, while also reducing the release of microfibres.

Dr Kelly Board, Technical Application Manager for Oxidation at LANXESS, said the product highlights how innovative chemistry can support sustainability in everyday applications by combining high performance with lower energy requirements. She added that Oxone opens new opportunities for detergent brands to develop more sustainable cleaning products without compromising consumer expectations.

The compound delivers comparable or improved cleaning results at lower dosages, enabling more compact and efficient detergent formats such as powders, pods and tablets. After oxidation, Oxone fully dissolves into simple sulphate and potassium ions in less than ten seconds, supporting the development of fast-acting product designs.

Formulations using Oxone can also be tailored to help preserve colourfastness, offering additional reassurance to both consumers and brands. The compound is chlorine-free and odourless, contributing to a more pleasant user experience.

In addition, Oxone’s favourable risk classification in Class 8, rather than Class 5.1 for oxidisers, reduces transportation risks and simplifies storage compared with alternative oxidising agents. Beyond laundry detergents, Oxone is suitable for a wide range of household applications, including automatic dishwashing products, appliance cleaners, and toilet, drain and surface cleaning solutions.
