Liebherr Cranes Drive Fehmarnbelt Tunnel Progress
Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, one of Europe’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. Many of the cranes are rail-mounted, providing mobility across vast production and assembly sites on the Danish coast, where conditions are often harsh and schedules tight.
Models such as the Liebherr 380 EC-B 16 and 630 EC-H 40 have demonstrated consistent performance even in weather that halted other systems. The cranes are tasked with handling 79 tunnel elements, each 217 metres long and weighing about 73,000 tonnes. The project is set to become the world’s longest immersed tunnel, linking Denmark’s Lolland island with Germany’s Fehmarn island under the Baltic Sea.
The link will include a two-track electrified railway and four motorway lanes, cutting travel time between Hamburg and Copenhagen. Liebherr says the tunnel highlights its cranes’ reliability, durability, and ease of maintenance, further reinforcing their reputation for use in large-scale, complex projects.
