The Liebherr 520 EC-B 20 Fibre flat-top crane is playing a crucial role in the precision assembly of large steel components during the construction of the new Schuman Bridge in Brest, France. As the most powerful fibre crane currently operating in the French market, it is showcasing its advanced performance capabilities on one of the region’s most significant infrastructure projects.
Enhancing Urban Mobility:
The new Schuman Bridge is being built alongside the original 1950s structure, which no longer supports the demands of modern public transport. It will serve as part of the extension to Brest’s tram line B and will also cater to cyclists and pedestrians. Measuring 204 metres in length and 12.25 metres in width, the bridge requires precise handling of heavy steel components—making the Liebherr crane essential to the project’s success.
Technical Strength and Efficiency:
Renowned for its sturdy design, modular tower configurations, and ease of transport, the 520 EC-B 20 Fibre is equipped with Liebherr’s Litronic control system and precision load placement technology. These features make it highly suited to complex, large-scale infrastructure works like the Schuman Bridge. The project is set for completion by late 2025 and is expected to significantly improve regional urban mobility.
Advantages of Fibre Rope Technology:
The crane is operated by Saint-Yves Services, a long-standing Liebherr customer. The company praised the crane’s efficiency, particularly the benefits of fibre rope technology over conventional steel ropes. “The combination of power, efficiency, and ease of handling gives us a considerable competitive edge,” said Alexandre Saint-Yves.
The 520 EC-B 20 Fibre offers high load capacity, extended reach, and superior manoeuvrability—even in tight spaces. With a fleet of eleven Liebherr fibre cranes, Saint-Yves Services continues to lead with innovation and regards fibre rope as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative for future construction applications.
