Liebherr to Invest in Modernising Tower Crane Plant in Biberach
The first phase will see several tens of millions invested in upgrading and expanding the production plant, reflecting Liebherr’s strong commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base and to its skilled local workforce.
Werner Seifried, Managing Director for Development and Production, said, “We are building one of the most state-of-the-art crane production plants in the world. The market is evolving, and we are responding with innovation, automation, and sustainability.”
The phased project will include the demolition and reconstruction of older production halls, dating back to the 1980s, to create a highly automated facility capable of producing around 500 top-slewing cranes, 200 mobile construction cranes, and 3,000 tower sections annually.
Liebherr’s plans integrate economic and environmental sustainability, with energy-efficient buildings, resource-saving production, and modern, ergonomic workspaces for employees. Advanced automation, digital processes, and robotics are already being incorporated into operations.
Globally, Liebherr will strategically align its production network — with Pamplona (Spain) focusing on bottom-slewing cranes and Pune (India) on top-slewing cranes for cost-sensitive markets. The modernisation will be executed in five phases through to 2034, with employees actively involved and trained throughout the transition.
