Liebherr Tower Cranes Support Restoration of Parador de Santiago

Liebherr’s Flat-Top EC-B tower cranes are facilitating the careful restoration of the Parador de Santiago de Compostela, one of Galicia’s most iconic cultural monuments. Located opposite the city’s cathedral in the bustling Plaza del Obradoiro, the site poses unique challenges owing to limited space and high footfall in a protected heritage zone.

The 71 EC-B and 125 EC-B cranes, supplied by Maga Vigo, are operating at heights of 36 and 52 metres with jib lengths of 50 and 58 metres, respectively. Their low noise emissions, compact design, and precision controls make them ideally suited for urban, heritage-sensitive environments.

Originally a pilgrim hospital, the Parador now functions as a prestigious five-star hotel and is the highest-grossing property in the state-owned Paradores hotel network. Restoration works include façade renewal, cornice repair, courtyard renovations, and conservation of the royal chapel’s dome. The objective is to preserve architectural integrity while upgrading structural systems.

The project is part of a broader national refurbishment programme by the Paradores group, with a total investment of €89.5 million across 40 historic properties in 12 Spanish regions and Ceuta. About €14 million is allocated to the first phase, including the Santiago site, with completion expected in 19 months.

Jesús Gañete, MD of Maga Vigo, remarked, “To be part of one of the most significant restoration projects of Galicia’s cultural heritage is a great source of pride.” Gruas Norte, also involved, noted the local importance of the project, calling it a special milestone for the team in their home city.

Liebherr’s EC-B series continues to demonstrate its value on constrained, culturally sensitive construction sites by ensuring efficiency, safety, and minimal disruption in historic environments.
