Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, (MHI) has secured an order to supply four circulating water pumps (CWPs) for Units 5 and 6 of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant in China. The order has been placed in collaboration with Dongfang Electric Machinery Co. (DFEM), a core company of the Dongfang Electric Group, one of China’s top three heavy electrical equipment manufacturers. 

This marks the first collaboration between MHI and DFEM, under which both companies plan to jointly expand their presence in the circulating water pump market for nuclear power plants in China. 

The Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant is located in Sanmen County, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province. Units 5 and 6, which will use the Hualong One (HPR1000) reactor design—a pressurised water reactor with 1215 MWe capacity—will follow the earlier Units 1 and 2 (already operational) and Units 3 and 4 (under construction). 

Circulating water pumps play a critical role in nuclear power plants by cooling steam discharged from turbines in the secondary system of pressurised water reactors. They draw large volumes of water from a source and supply it to condensers to convert steam back into water, requiring large-scale pumping systems. 

MHI has a strong track record in this domain, having delivered over 500 CWPs globally. The company aims to leverage strategic partnerships like the one with DFEM to bring its technologies, products, and services to a broader customer base. 

Through such collaborations, MHI will continue to contribute to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability across global markets.
