WEIMA Unveils High-Torque Drive for Waste Shredders at IFAT 2026

WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH will showcase a new high-torque drive system for waste shredders at IFAT 2026 in Munich, highlighting advancements in industrial waste processing and recycling technology. The drive debuts in the W8.15 PowerLine, a single-shaft shredder designed for demanding waste streams and large-scale recycling operations.

The W8.15 PowerLine features a 1,500 mm working width and is used for the primary or secondary shredding of mixed commercial waste, household refuse and processed residual materials used in refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production. Its robust rotor design, variable screen concepts and multiple drive configurations ensure consistent shredding performance with high throughput rates.

For IFAT 2026, the shredder is equipped with a high-torque direct drive system developed by Baumüller in cooperation with Nidec Desch. The system delivers exceptionally high torque even at low speeds, reaching up to 61,000 Nm, enabling efficient processing of difficult-to-shred materials. The optimised interaction between the drive and rotor shaft improves power transmission while supporting energy-efficient and stable operations.

WEIMA also offers different drive concepts across its W8 series to suit varied processing requirements. Hydraulic drives are particularly suited for applications with fluctuating loads, delivering high torque with relatively lower kilowatt demand. In contrast, electromechanical direct drives provide strong energy efficiency and reduced maintenance requirements.

At the exhibition, the company will also present the C.200 hydraulic dewatering press, designed to remove moisture and compress materials such as packaging waste, metal shavings, grinding sludge and sewage sludge. The system helps reduce material volume while integrating smoothly into existing waste and water treatment processes.

WEIMA positions itself as a system supplier for the waste and recycling industry, working with partners specialising in conveying technology, extraction systems, sorting solutions and energy integration. Together, these collaborations support end-to-end processing solutions covering shredding, material transport, sorting and downstream production processes.

The company has supplied more than 43,000 machines worldwide over the past four decades, including shredders, briquetting presses and dewatering systems used across wood, plastic, paper, metal and waste industries. All machines are manufactured in Germany at facilities in Saxony-Anhalt and Baden-Württemberg and distributed through a global network including locations in the US, Italy, India and China.
