CM Reviews Key Projects in New Shillong Township

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma conducted a site inspection of key infrastructure initiatives in New Shillong Township, focusing on transport upgrades, commercial development, and environmental sustainability.

A major highlight was the review of the ongoing expansion of a two-lane road into a four-lane highway. The upgraded route will include a dedicated cycling lane and integrated utility corridors to enhance internal connectivity. Officials stated that the project is expected to ease traffic congestion and facilitate long-term urban growth.

The Chief Minister also visited the construction site of the Unity Mall—an upcoming commercial hub aimed at bolstering local enterprise. “Excited to see various projects coming up in the Township,” Sangma wrote on social media following the visit.

Another key stop was the newly completed Ummir–Mawkhanu Road, which links to the proposed Administrative and Knowledge City. Discussions during the visit included introducing avenue plantations along the route to improve its aesthetic appeal. Sangma noted the importance of integrating greenery with infrastructure to uplift the township’s visual environment.

Environmental concerns were also on the agenda. The Chief Minister visited a Miyawaki afforestation site at Mawsharoh in Ummir, developed under the State Plan. The one-hectare plot uses the Japanese Miyawaki method to cultivate dense forests with native plant species. “The hectare-wide area is a planned forest capturing more carbon,” he said, highlighting its role in local climate resilience.

New Shillong Township is poised to become a vital centre for administration, business, and sustainable living in Meghalaya.
