Hyatt Hotels Corporation will enter Sikkim with a new 150-room property in Gangtok, officials said after the foundation stone was laid virtually by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. The hotel will be developed at Mintokgang as part of the Suryavilas mixed-use project, located about two km from MG Marg on the road to Tsomgo Lake. The development marks the first Hyatt-branded property in the state and is expected to raise the profile of Gangtok as a hospitality destination in the Eastern Himalayas.

The Himalayan state recorded over one point seven million (mn) tourist arrivals in 2025, including more than 71,000 foreign visitors, according to officials. Overall accommodation capacity in Sikkim ranges between 42,000 and 45,000 tourists per day, but premium inventory in central Gangtok remains limited and the new property is intended to address that gap. The Hyatt Regency Gangtok will feature multiple dining outlets, a spa, a swimming pool, fitness facilities and about 13,000 sq ft of meeting and event space aimed at promoting meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions tourism.

A licensed casino facility is planned as part of the development, while the investment figure for the project was not immediately available. The chief minister described the project as reflecting growing investor confidence in Sikkim’s peaceful environment and progressive governance and said it demonstrated the state’s potential as a premier destination in the region. He congratulated the SM Group, the Poddar Group and Hyatt for their collaboration and noted the role such partnerships can play in attracting international operators.

Tamang indicated that the entry of a global hospitality brand would enhance Sikkim’s international visibility, attract higher quality tourism and create meaningful employment and skill-development opportunities for local youth. He underlined the state government’s commitment to sustainable and responsible development that protects the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and said the project would be pursued with those priorities in mind. Officials expect the construction and subsequent operation of the hotel to provide a boost to the local hospitality sector and related services.
