The Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved the redevelopment of 4,973 flats across 498 plots in Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Nagar, Andheri (West). The project, to be executed through the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), is among the largest redevelopment initiatives undertaken by the authority in Mumbai.

SVP Nagar, originally developed in 1993 under a World Bank-assisted housing scheme for Low Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG) families, spans hundreds of plots. The colony comprises:

With over 80 societies and 2,600+ families, the redevelopment plan will significantly transform the area.

Redevelopment of seven societies has already been completed, while three are under construction and agreements have been signed for another six societies. MHADA will now focus on redeveloping the remaining 82 societies, housing around 2,666 families.

Over the years, several buildings and chawls in SVP Nagar have become dilapidated, creating an urgent need for modernisation. The redevelopment aims to provide residents with spacious, contemporary apartments while improving safety and living standards.

Aligned with BMC’s Development Control Regulations (DCR), MHADA’s plan envisions a township-style layout featuring residential, recreational, educational, health, and commercial facilities. Despite its origins as affordable housing, SVP Nagar today also houses film production houses and an acting school, reflecting its unique cultural mix.
