The Maharashtra government, in collaboration with Brookfield Corporation, plans to develop Asia’s largest Global Capacity Centre with an investment of over $1 billion, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday at the Jio World Centre. A memorandum of understanding for the project is expected to be signed shortly.

Aligned with the state’s ambition to position Maharashtra as the “GCC capital”, the proposed centre will span nearly 2 million square feet and is expected to generate 15,000 direct jobs and a further 30,000 indirect employment opportunities. Fadnavis said the project could be among the largest of its kind globally and would significantly strengthen the state’s role in hosting global in-house operations.

Beyond Brookfield, the state government is also in discussions with logistics major FedEx to establish additional GCCs in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Maharashtra has earlier announced plans to set up around 400 GCCs across the state over the next five years, with Pune identified as a key growth hub. On regulation, Fadnavis said the initial focus would remain on tier-1 cities such as Mumbai and Pune before expanding to tier-2 locations.

Workspace solutions provider WeWork has previously indicated that India’s GCC workforce could expand sharply to between 10 million and 20 million over time. Global companies are increasingly shifting from outsourcing to insourcing, as operating GCCs in India is more cost-effective than routing services through traditional IT providers.
