Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated 184 newly built Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, New Delhi. The complex features four towers — Krishna, Godavari, Kosi and Hooghly — named after major Indian rivers, symbolising unity and vitality.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said the new residences will enhance MPs’ ease of living in Delhi and address the long-standing shortage of government housing. He congratulated all MPs and commended the engineers and shramjeevis for their dedication in completing the project.

Mr Modi recalled the poor state of older MP accommodations, noting that the new housing would free MPs from such challenges and allow them to focus on public service. He highlighted that first-time MPs often face difficulties in securing housing in Delhi, which these buildings will help resolve. Over 180 MPs will now live together in the new complex.

The Prime Minister linked the project to economic efficiency, pointing out that ministries previously paid nearly Rs 15 billion annually in rent for offices, and that inadequate MP housing had increased government costs. No new housing for Lok Sabha MPs was built between 2004 and 2014, he said, adding that since 2014, about 350 MP residences have been completed, saving public funds.

He emphasised that 21st-century India is pursuing development alongside social responsibility — citing the construction of Kartavya Path, Kartavya Bhavan, and the new Parliament building, while also delivering piped water to millions, building new medical colleges, and providing homes to 40 million poor families under the PM Awas Yojana.

Highlighting sustainability, Mr Modi said the MP residences feature solar-enabled infrastructure and reflect India’s commitment to green development. He encouraged MPs to embody the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat by celebrating regional festivals together, inviting constituents, and promoting linguistic exchange. Cleanliness and hygiene, he said, should be defining features of the complex, and suggested Swachhata competitions between MP residential complexes.
