SBI Chennai office earns IGBC Near Net Zero Energy certification

State Bank of India’s (SBI) Local Head Office in Chennai has received the Indian Green Building Council’s (IGBC) Near Net Zero Energy (Operations) certification. The certification was announced at the IGBC Green Tamil Nadu Summit 2026.

The building has an Energy Performance Index (EPI) of 130 kWh/sq m/year, below the baseline EPI of 137 kWh/sq m/year. It offsets 85.4 per cent of its annual energy consumption through a combination of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and offsite wind power procured through the Open Access mechanism.

The certification recognises the building’s focus on reducing operational energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy. The approach combines energy-efficient systems with onsite and offsite renewable energy sources.

SBI has 285 IGBC-registered projects and 103 IGBC-certified green and Net Zero projects across India.

B Ramalingam, Assistant General Manager, Premises & Estates, and M Mariappan, Assistant General Manager, Electrical, represented SBI at the event.

SBI said the certification is aligned with its goal of achieving Net Zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 and Net Zero across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2055. The bank plans to expand similar energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives across its offices and branches.

UnniKrishnan AR, National Vice-Chairman, CII-Indian Green Building Council, said, “India’s Net Zero transition will require action across every sector, and the financial services sector has a particularly important role to play. SBI’s Chennai Local Head Office demonstrates how large institutional buildings can move beyond conventional energy-efficiency measures towards a more comprehensive Net Zero Energy approach.”

The certification also highlights the potential for large institutional facilities to reduce operational emissions through energy-efficient systems, rooftop renewable energy and offsite renewable power procurement.
