Sharjah has unveiled Uruk, a proposed model for a new generation of sustainable cities designed for the post-artificial intelligence (AI) era. The project was announced at the second edition of Sharjah Next through a strategic partnership between Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SPARK), American University of Sharjah (AUS) and SEE Holding.
The announcement was made in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, and Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS and Chairperson of SPARK.
Uruk is envisioned as an AI-powered city designed to achieve self-sufficiency in energy, water and food production. Its energy requirements will be met through solar, wind and biogas, while water systems will combine groundwater desalination with treated wastewater reuse. Circular waste management will also form part of the proposed infrastructure.
The city will incorporate indoor and outdoor farming, fish, egg and honey production, as well as private farming plots for residents. Local food production will be supplemented by suppliers across Sharjah.
Robotics and intelligent systems will support everyday services such as deliveries, cleaning and security. The urban layout will prioritise walking and cycling, alongside electric and shared mobility options.
Hussain Al Mahmoudi, CEO, SPARK, said the ambition was to create an innovation city with AI integrated into its foundations, bringing together researchers, entrepreneurs, companies and universities to test technologies and accelerate their application.
Faris Saeed, Founder and Chairman, SEE Holding, said the proposed model aimed to use technology and resource management to reduce everyday demands on residents and create more time for family, health, creativity and community life.
Uruk is also intended to function as a living laboratory, where researchers, students and entrepreneurs can develop and test emerging technologies in real-world conditions, with residents participating in shaping solutions to community needs.
