IIT Indore Develops AI-Based Smart Traffic System
The technology is designed to send timely alerts to motorists about potential hazards and traffic conditions, helping drivers respond more effectively. Prof Prabhat Kumar Upadhyay of IIT Indore’s Department of Electrical Engineering said that as the world moves towards autonomous vehicles, developing intelligent and safe traffic systems has become increasingly important.
He said the institute has developed a next-generation traffic management solution using artificial intelligence and advanced communication technologies. The system is based on Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology, which enables moving vehicles to exchange messages with other vehicles and surrounding infrastructure to prevent accidents and reduce congestion.
Explaining how the system works, Upadhyay said drivers receive instant alerts about poor road conditions, accidents ahead and traffic build-ups along their route, allowing them to take timely action. These messages are transmitted using high-speed wireless networks such as 4G LTE and 5G, ensuring rapid and reliable communication.
A key challenge addressed by the IIT Indore team is the efficient sharing of limited wireless communication resources between conventional mobile users and vehicles exchanging time-sensitive safety messages. To overcome this, the researchers have developed intelligent resource allocation algorithms that dynamically allocate communication resources based on real-time traffic conditions, network load and signal quality, ensuring low-latency and reliable communication for safety applications.
Highlighting the broader significance of the work, Prof Suhas Joshi, Director of IIT Indore, said road safety and sustainable mobility are among the most pressing challenges today. He added that research in connected and intelligent transportation systems such as C-V2X represents a transformative step towards safer roads and smarter cities.
Joshi said the research being undertaken at IIT Indore demonstrates how advanced communication technologies, combined with rigorous engineering research, can deliver impactful solutions that save lives, reduce congestion and strengthen India’s preparedness for autonomous and future mobility.
