Karnataka has announced plans to establish a 200-acre semiconductor park within the upcoming KWIN (Knowledge, Wellbeing and Innovation) City near Bengaluru. The initiative, unveiled by Minister for Large and Medium Industries M. B. Patil at the Bengaluru Tech Summit, is intended to support semiconductor manufacturing and research through ready-to-use infrastructure and an integrated innovation ecosystem.

According to the Minister, the Department of Large and Medium Industries is prioritising investment from global technology majors and anchor firms. The State is targeting emerging industrial domains such as semiconductor devices, drones and solar energy, alongside new-generation industrial models aligned with Industry 5.0. Karnataka already hosts more than 800 R&D centres, over 100 chip-design firms and around 18,300 start-ups in deep tech, space technology, AI and quantum computing.

The proposed 5,000-acre KWIN City will allocate significant space for research-driven development, supported by a strong ecosystem of industry and academia. The dedicated 200-acre semiconductor zone is expected to become a key hub for chip innovation.

Patil emphasised that Karnataka continues to attract high-technology investment owing to its engineering and research strengths. The State government has allocated Rs6 billion to support enterprises working in AI, machine learning, robotics, quantum technologies, sustainable innovation and advanced manufacturing. Plans are also underway to establish a Centre of Excellence for AI and Quantum Computing in Dharwad.

Industries across the State are collaborating with academic institutions in fields such as biotechnology and cybersecurity, with Karnataka advancing policies related to Electronics System Design and Manufacturing, transport systems, start-up development and biotechnology. The government is also strengthening partnerships with countries including Japan, the United States, Germany and Singapore to consolidate its position in frontier technologies.

The semiconductor park is expected to reinforce Karnataka’s ambition to remain a leading hub for deep-science research, advanced manufacturing and next-generation technology development.
