Ashwini Vaishnaw, Communications and IT minister, informed that Micron's India plant is scheduled to commence groundbreaking for its semiconductor factory within the next four to six weeks. The Gujarat government has allocated land for the project to the company. Vaishnaw noted that the first 'Make in India' chip is expected to be manufactured at Micron's assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, by December 2024. This announcement follows the semiconductor packaging major's recent investment of $ 825 million in India.

Vaishnaw stated during an event that the manufacturing of the first 'Make in India' chip would take place at the aforementioned factory by December 2024. He also mentioned that under the domestic semiconductor Design Linked Incentive Scheme (DLI), five design companies have received approval, two of which will focus on telecom for beam formation and satellite communication. In addition, significant progress has been made in talent development, with the ministry partnering with 104 universities. As a result, the course for semiconductor manufacturing has commenced in 310 colleges.

The minister of communication highlighted that the government has already invested around Rs 16 billion in telecom manufacturing. Consequently, the country has become a technology exporter, with exports to 12 countries including the US. The government has also approved an allocation of ₹380 billion to expand the country's 4G coverage from 99% to 100%. Additionally, Vaishnaw stated that the country ranks among the top three 5G ecosystems globally.
