As of February 28, 2025, a total of 15,057 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been opened across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). The distribution of these centers across various states and union territories is detailed in the annexure.
Ensuring a consistent supply of medicines to JAKs is a key priority. A robust, IT-enabled supply chain system has been established, comprising a central warehouse in Gurugram and four regional warehouses in Bengaluru, Guwahati, Chennai, and Surat. Additionally, 36 distributors have been appointed nationwide to strengthen the supply chain. The availability of 400 high-demand medicines is regularly monitored, and a minimum stocking mandate has been introduced for 200 essential medicines. This mandate includes the top 100 selling medicines from the PMBJP product basket and 100 fast-moving medicines in the market. JAK owners are incentivised for maintaining these stocks, ensuring the availability of essential medicines. Since JAKs operate on an entrepreneurial model, product stocking is determined by individual demand at each centre.
To maintain quality standards, medicines supplied to JAKs are procured only from WHO-GMP-certified manufacturers. Each batch undergoes testing at NABL-accredited laboratories, and only after passing stringent quality checks are they distributed to JAKs. Additionally, the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India conducts regular quality audits of vendor facilities to uphold safety standards.
