ABB India has strengthened its local manufacturing capabilities with the launch of a new production line for variable speed drive (VSD) modules at its Peenya factory in Bengaluru. This expansion increases ABB’s local drive production capacity by approximately 25 per ent, reinforcing the company’s commitment to India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
Equipped with cutting-edge automation and digital technologies, the new line will cater to the growing demand for energy-efficient drives that enhance productivity and operational performance across industries. It will manufacture large power rating drives for sectors such as buildings, data centers, water, cement, and metals. With localized production, the new line is expected to reduce lead times by up to 40%, ensuring faster and more reliable deliveries, including customized “made-to-order” drive solutions tailored to evolving industrial needs.
“As we mark two decades of drives production in India, this expansion reinforces our strong commitment to advancing local manufacturing and delivering energy-efficient technologies for India’s industries,” said AR Madhusudan, Business Line Manager, Drive Products, ABB India. “With our focus on localization, ABB India’s expanded and upgraded drives factory will cater to customers with greater reliability, speed, and agility, leveraging cutting-edge automation.”
The new ergonomically designed line integrates advanced robotics and digital production monitoring systems to automate key manufacturing processes that enhance energy efficiency and reliability. Aligned with Industry 4.0 standards, the facility uses sensor-based tools for precision component placement and real-time operational visibility, ensuring consistent quality and efficiency. Robotics have also been deployed for intra-factory logistics, improving safety and reducing manual handling.
“As India accelerates toward its sustainability goals, ABB drives are playing a vital role in enabling energy efficiency across industries,” said Tuomo Hoysniemi, Division President, Drive Products, ABB Motion. “This expansion underlines our focus on strengthening local production and technology capabilities while supporting India’s clean growth ambitions. By building stronger local ecosystems, we are helping industries become more energy efficient and future-ready.”
The expansion coincides with ABB celebrating 50 years of innovation in variable speed drives globally and 20 years of drives production excellence in India. From metros and airports to pharmaceuticals and metals, ABB’s drives have powered numerous nation-building projects, optimizing motor control and energy use in diverse industrial and infrastructure applications.
ABB India continues to pioneer advancements in sustainable manufacturing, combining innovation, reliability, and performance to set new benchmarks in energy efficiency and automation for a cleaner and smarter industrial future.
