AIPEF demands withdrawal of discom privatisation plans in UP, Chandigarh

The All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) has submitted a memorandum to the government calling for the withdrawal of the ongoing privatisation process of electricity distribution companies (discoms) in Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh.

In the memorandum, AIPEF urged the Minister of State for Power to intervene and halt the privatisation efforts in Uttar Pradesh. The federation also called for a review of the privatisation of the profit-making Chandigarh Power Department and emphasized that no privatisation should take place in the larger interest of consumers and employees.

AIPEF Chairman Shailendra Dubey stated that discoms should remain in the public sector for the benefit of both consumers and employees. He highlighted that in most states, the public sector has successfully achieved viability, with a significant reduction in aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses over the past two to three years.

Dubey also mentioned that protests are ongoing against the government's plans to privatise UP's discoms, Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (PVVNL) and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (DVVNL).
