Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the state government is working to ensure pucca (concrete) houses for all sections of society. He made the remarks while launching the distribution of sanction letters to 325,234 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G) at a state-level event in Boko, Kamrup district.

Sarma said the scheme aims to provide housing for economically weaker families across India, and the Assam government is committed to ensuring that all eligible households receive the benefit. He noted that sanction letters were earlier distributed to 500,000 beneficiaries on 19 May 2022. The first instalment was then released to 200,000 beneficiaries the same month, followed by 300,000 beneficiaries in February 2023.

In July 2023, the government facilitated Griha Pravesh for more than 300,000 PMAY beneficiaries in a single day. Sarma added that sanction letters for 388,358 beneficiaries were distributed in March this year, with a further 325,234 beneficiaries added on Tuesday.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that every family living in a kutcha house receives a pucca home, the Chief Minister said geo-tagging of all eligible households has been completed, and new beneficiary lists will be finalised in upcoming gram sabhas. The scheme, he said, has restored dignity to poor families by providing safe and secure housing.

Highlighting other welfare efforts, Sarma said the government aims to create a system where poor households can access schemes without corruption. He stated that, through various central and state initiatives, every poor family in Assam receives benefits worth nearly Rs 3,000 per month, and encouraged families to use these savings for their children’s education.
