Barabhum railway station in Purulia district of West Bengal has been substantially renovated under the Amrit Bharat Yojana, with the central government allocating Rs 73.5 million (mn) for redevelopment. The station sits on the Asansol-Tatanagar-Kharagpur main line and falls under the Adra division of the South Eastern Railway Zone. Upgrades are intended to modernise passenger handling and improve hygiene and aesthetics across the premises.

The project delivered a range of passenger amenities including a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge, elevators, a modern waiting room and improved sheds, while high-level platforms and enhanced lighting were also installed. Train coach position display boards and new seating arrangements have been added and toilet facilities were refurbished alongside gardening and exterior renovation. These works seek to streamline flows and raise comfort for daily commuters and long-distance travellers.

Station walls have been embellished with paintings that depict freedom fighters and motifs from local tribal culture, which contributed to the positive response from passengers and residents. Locals reported that the station is markedly cleaner than before and noted an uptick in passenger traffic between December and the Holi festival period. Comments from community members also conveyed satisfaction with the station master and a sense that the renovations have transformed a formerly neglected facility into a place that attracts visitors from surrounding districts.

The station serves as a junction connecting West Bengal with neighbouring Jharkhand and Odisha and retains religious significance for some travellers. Officials expect the full construction and commissioning of facilities in the coming days to further enhance the passenger experience. The redevelopment at Barabhum forms part of a broader push to modernise regional rail infrastructure under the Amrit Bharat Yojana.
