Bhubaneswar Railway Station Upgraded To Meet Future Demand
Six additional platforms are being constructed to handle increased train traffic and reduce congestion, while high level driveways and wider platforms are being developed to improve circulation. An air concourse is being introduced to enable seamless movement across platforms and integrate eastern and western access. Upgraded foot overbridges will improve safety and flow.
Passenger amenities will include multiple lifts and escalators to ease vertical movement, dedicated mobile charging points and other conveniences aimed at reducing dwell times and crowding. Two new overbridges are planned to streamline movement within the station precinct and support better pedestrian flows across tracks. Work also includes improvements to signage, lighting and wayfinding to aid navigation for first time and regular travellers. Project teams are coordinating with city authorities to align traffic management and last mile connectivity plans.
The station currently handles around 80,000 passengers daily and projections indicate it may soon cross 0.1 million (mn) passengers per day as the city grows. Once complete, the upgraded station is expected to offer a smoother, more efficient travel experience and to support tourism and economic activity across the region. The redevelopment is intended to prepare Bhubaneswar as a key gateway to Odisha and to accommodate anticipated growth without compromising safety or service levels.
