The Bihar government has recently announced plans to increase the number of CNG buses in the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) fleet to promote cleaner and more affordable public transport. Transport Minister Shravan Kumar, during a departmental review, directed officials to scale up CNG and electric buses while improving operational efficiency across the state.

BSRTC currently operates 840 buses, including 266 CNG buses, 25 electric buses, and 593 modern diesel buses. Preliminary discussions have begun on procuring additional CNG buses to meet rising demand and reduce emissions.

The corporation runs services on 187 routes across six divisions, with 14 buses providing interstate connectivity. Key routes such as Muzaffarpur–Ranchi, Gaya–Varanasi, and Gaya–Ranchi continue to support heavy commuter movement across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

To strengthen women’s safety, BSRTC operates 100 CNG-powered Pink Buses equipped with CCTV, GPS tracking, panic buttons, sanitary pad vending machines, mobile charging points, and other amenities. These buses are deployed across Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, Purnia, and Bhagalpur.

Commuters have welcomed the services for their affordability, convenience, and frequency. Many passengers noted that fares are almost half the cost of auto travel and praised the punctuality and comfort of AC buses.

By expanding its CNG and electric fleet, BSRTC aims to enhance sustainable mobility, reduce environmental impact, and improve accessibility for passengers across Bihar.
