Aditya Birla Group Chairman and BITS Pilani Chancellor Kumar Mangalam Birla on 13 July unveiled a Rs 22 billion expansion plan for BITS Pilani. The ambitious initiative includes setting up an AI+ campus in Amaravati, launching an edtech platform, and upgrading existing campuses.
The multi-pronged plan begins with Project Vistaar, a Rs 12 billion investment to modernise and expand the Pilani, Hyderabad, and Goa campuses. It will add new academic blocks, research centres, hostels, and faculty housing. Student capacity is set to rise from 18,700 to 26,000 over the next five years.
The second major move is a Rs 10 billion AI+ Campus in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. Designed to be future-ready, the campus will focus on artificial intelligence, data science, robotics, computational linguistics, and cyber-physical systems. With a capacity of over 7,000 students, it will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes, along with global university collaborations and industry internships.
The third initiative is BITS Pilani Digital, an edtech platform targeting over 100,000 learners in five years. It will launch with 32 programmes—11 degrees and 21 certificates—featuring industry-relevant content, career support, and optional on-campus immersion experiences.
Birla emphasised that these initiatives align with India’s National Education Policy (NEP), aiming to create a globally competitive, inclusive, and scalable higher education ecosystem.
