BorgWarner Batteries to Power HOLON’s Autonomous Shuttle

BorgWarner, a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, has secured a contract to supply its advanced battery system for the new HOLON urban—a 15-seater, Level 4 autonomous, fully electric shuttle developed by the BENTELER Group. This marks BorgWarner’s first contract for an autonomous vehicle battery system in North America.

Each shuttle will feature two lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) 5AKM 157 cylindrical cell battery packs, each equipped with an integrated, replaceable contactor box and a multi-pack controller. The 57 kWh battery packs feature a modular design, stainless-steel casing, and active liquid cooling for enhanced performance and safety.

Henk Vanthournout, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of Battery and Charging Systems, said, “BorgWarner’s expertise in energy density, scalability, and safety certifications makes us an ideal partner for HOLON. Their commitment to safe, sustainable, and inclusive transport aligns with our vision for a clean, energy-efficient world.”

BorgWarner customised its pack design to fit HOLON’s space and performance needs, integrating its proprietary software and multi-pack controller that meets cybersecurity and functional safety standards.

Flavio Friesen, VP Engineering at HOLON, added, “BorgWarner’s battery platform offers benchmark energy density, safety, and serviceability. The modular, liquid-cooled system suits our shuttle’s packaging and uptime requirements for North America, Europe, and the Middle East.”

The battery system is Buy America compliant and meets the Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) restriction. Production is set to begin in Q2 2027 at BorgWarner’s Seneca, South Carolina facility.
