BWSSB Seeks Nod To Fell 615 Trees For Bengaluru STPs

Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board has approached the Greater Bengaluru Authority seeking approval to remove 615 trees for the construction of sewage treatment plants in the Doddabele and Mallasandra areas of the city.

According to a notification issued on December 24, the BWSSB has submitted an application through its executive engineer for wastewater management projects in the Vrushabhavati Valley Division, requesting permission to remove trees at its Doddabele premises to set up a 100 million litres per day sewage treatment plant. The proposal involves the removal of 355 trees. The forest department of the Greater Bengaluru Authority has invited objections and suggestions from the public within 10 days from the date of the notification.

Separately, the BWSSB has also sought approval from the GBA forest wing to remove 310 trees at Mallasandra for another sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 100 million litres per day. Officials said both proposals are part of the city’s broader wastewater management and infrastructure expansion plans.

A senior official from the GBA forest wing said public feedback has been invited under Section 3(3)(vii) of the Karnataka Tree Preservation Act, 1976. All objections and suggestions received will be placed before the Tree Committee, following which a report will be prepared and further action taken based on its recommendations.

The request follows a similar proposal submitted last month by the Council of Architecture, which sought permission to fell or translocate 355 trees at its two-acre office campus within Bengaluru University for development-related works.

Members of the public can submit their objections or suggestions directly to the executive engineer of the wastewater management project at eewwmp-vv@bwssb.gov.in , or to the Deputy Conservator of Forests and Tree Officer, GBA, NR Square, Bengaluru–560002, or via email at dcfbbmp12@gmail.com , within 10 days.
