Cabinet Approves New Sports Policy, Rs 1 Trillion R&D Fund

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared a new National Sports Policy that replaces the 2001 framework. Designed as a strategic roadmap, the policy seeks to transform India into a global sporting power and a serious medal contender at the 2036 Olympic Games.

Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandviya hailed the measure as a “landmark” step that will nurture a sports culture at the grassroots, expand infrastructure, and strengthen athlete development.

Beyond sport, the Cabinet approved several initiatives aimed at research and job creation. Chief among them is a Rs 1 trillion fund to support research, development, and innovation in sunrise sectors, accelerating technological progress and manufacturing strength.

An Employment Linked Incentive Scheme was also endorsed. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained that the scheme focuses on manufacturing, with separate provisions to encourage both first time employers and sustained job creation.
