Cabinet approves Rs 22.54 billion for NFIES

The Union Cabinet has approved the Ministry of Home Affairs? (MHA) National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES), allocating Rs 22.54 billionfor the period from 2024-25 to 2028-29.

Under this scheme, the MHA will establish new campuses for the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) and central forensic science laboratories across the country. Additionally, the existing infrastructure of the NFSU's Delhi campus will be scaled up.

With new criminal laws set to come into force in July, mandating forensic investigations for offences punishable by seven years or more, the scheme aims to enhance the forensic capabilities and address the shortage of trained forensic professionals in the country. The increased demand for forensic services will significantly boost the workload of laboratories.

The government emphasises the importance of a scientific and timely examination of evidence to ensure an efficient criminal justice process. The NFIES aims to support the creation of a high-quality forensic workforce, leveraging advancements in technology and addressing evolving crime methods.

The scheme?s implementation will help alleviate the current backlog in forensic laboratories and support the government?s goal of achieving a high conviction rate of over 90%. (Source: BusinessLine)
