The Centre has approved an urban development package of Rs 27.53 bn for Madhya Pradesh under the Urban Challenge Fund (UCF), marking a significant step towards strengthening urban infrastructure and improving the quality of life in the state’s rapidly growing cities. The sanction follows the announcement of the UCF in the Union Budget 2026–27 and forms part of a broader push for planned urbanisation. Central authorities framed the allocation as support for transformative city projects and enhanced municipal capacity.

The funding will support a range of interventions across Madhya Pradesh, including modern civic infrastructure, water supply and sanitation, enhancement of public spaces, urban mobility solutions, digital governance systems and sustainable city planning. Officials said these measures are expected to improve public services and make urban centres more liveable for residents. The package will provide resources for municipal bodies to address future urban challenges and to prioritise technology driven solutions.

The chief minister, Dr Mohan Yadav, welcomed the approval and indicated that the financial assistance would give fresh momentum to the state’s urban development agenda. He noted that the package would enable cities to execute projects that improve civic amenities, strengthen municipal infrastructure and prepare urban centres for future growth. State authorities will coordinate with local bodies to translate the sanctioned funds into actionable project plans.

The Urban Challenge Fund has been designed to encourage states and urban local bodies to adopt innovative and sustainable development models that deliver long term social, economic and environmental benefits. Unlike conventional funding mechanisms, the programme rewards well planned projects that demonstrate measurable outcomes over time. Officials added that the approved projects are expected to create employment during implementation while enhancing the delivery of essential urban services. With this support, Madhya Pradesh is set to undertake a new phase of urban transformation focused on infrastructure that directly benefits citizens while strengthening the state’s capacity to meet the demands of rapid urbanisation.
