The Centre has approved Rs five billion (bn) for infrastructure work linked to the Haridwar Kumbh 2027, and work has accelerated on 34 projects across the city. The funding forms part of a coordinated plan to upgrade access, sanitation and civic services ahead of the religious congregation scheduled for 2027. State agencies have identified priority schemes and initiated tendering and execution to ensure timely delivery. The allocation follows intergovernmental consultations and prioritisation of high impact interventions.

The 34 projects include road widening, riverfront stabilisation, temporary pilgrim shelters, water supply augmentation, sewage treatment upgrades and power distribution strengthening. Agencies engaged in implementation include the public works department, urban local bodies and utility companies, with technical oversight from designated central teams. Procurement timelines and contract awards have been advanced to compress construction schedules. Environmental safeguards and utility relocation plans form part of the project scope.

Officials said the packages are being fast tracked to achieve practical completion well before the Kumbh date and to allow for testing and contingency works. The funding will be released in instalments linked to milestone achievements and compliance with environmental and safety standards, according to project documents. Coordinated traffic management and temporary facility planning are being integrated with infrastructure works to reduce disruption during construction. Training for local personnel and emergency drills are being scheduled alongside construction.

Local authorities expect the investments to improve pilgrim movement, sanitation and emergency response and to leave a lasting legacy for residents.
