Centre to Launch National Electricity Data Sharing Framework This Month
The initiative also aims to improve the consistency and usability of data for industry participants, including startups that work with large datasets. Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal said the framework would be accompanied by a national governance committee with participation from industry.
The ministry had released a draft of the framework in July for stakeholder comments. It proposes a common architecture for voluntary sharing of electricity-sector data, supported by standardised datasets, privacy safeguards and consent-based access.
The system is designed to support power-sector planning, grid operations, regulation and research. Standardising data structures could also make electricity datasets easier to use for digital and artificial intelligence-based applications, while helping organisations work with information collected across different parts of the sector.
A National Electricity Data Governance Committee has been proposed to oversee implementation. The committee is expected to be led by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and include representatives from the public and private sectors. Its proposed role reflects the ministry’s focus on establishing consistent governance for data collection, access and use.
The framework comes as India’s power sector increasingly relies on digital systems and larger volumes of operational data for grid management, planning and decision-making. By setting common standards and safeguards, the initiative is aimed at making sectoral data more reliable and accessible while supporting informed policy and operational decisions.
